內容簡介:
PROGRAM INFORMATION:
Badoaro’s libretto, based on Books 13-23 of Homer’s The Odyssey, narrates the vicissitudes of Ulysses after his arrival in Ithaca, following on from twenty years of journeying and attempting to make his return following the Trojan War.

Aided by the goddess Minerva, he succeeds in being reunited with his son Telemachus, taking revenge on a group of deceitful suitors and being recognized by his faithful and patient wife Penelope.

(from William Christie’s interview 2008 incl. in the DVD)

”Last year we gave a performance here in the Teatro Real of Monteverdi’s Orfeo and this year with Ulisse and next year with Poppea we’re no longer in Mantova and we’re no longer in the Court of the Prince. We’re in Venezia and we’re in, essentially, the beginnings of the public opera house and we’re also at the beginnings of what will become opera seria, that’s to say the most important thing is not the instrumental colour and the great dances and the great pageants, the beautiful effects it’s the singing, it’s the belcanto and so therefore the orchestras become simpler.

And this is the essential difference between Orfeo and these last... the two operas that represent the end of his life. Orfeo is the beginning of the 17th century the very beginning, the first ten years he’s a young man, a relatively young man Poppea and Ulisse are works of the end of his life when he becomes a resident in Venezia, he becomes the Maestro di Cappella of San Marco and he’s writing essentially for the new phenomenon which is the Venetian opera house”.

(from Kobie van Rensburg’s interview 2008 incl. in the DVD)

”Monteverdi is one of my favourite composers mainly because of the humanity involved in his music. When he composed ”L’Orfeo”, his first opera, in 1607 he also said that the reason why Orfeo moves us still today, actually, four-hundred years later is not because he was a god, but because he was a man and we see that same humanity in this music, in ”Il ritorno di Ulisse”.

The people that he portrays and the emotions are unbelievably real. And he uses the full palette of the musical devices of his time to transport the wonderful humanity of his characters and that’s probably the reason why together with Mozart and Handel his operas speak true to the heart.”

STRONG POINTS:
- Once again William Christie, Les Arts Florissants (they have recently celebrated the 30th anniversary) and Pier Luigi Pizzi converging as an inspired team performed a top class work.

- First Spanish performance of the opera and the second of the new Monteverdi trilogy by Teatro Real co-produced with La Fenice.

- The diffusion of this new recording will be certainly favoured by the very successful sale and reviewing result of ”L’Orfeo” DVD during the last months.

- DVD’s extra contents: interviews to W. Christie, K. van Rensburg and C. Rice.

BIO:
Les Arts Florissants
The vocal and instrumental ensemble Les Arts Florissants is one of the most renowned and respected early music groups in Europe and around the world. Dedicated to the performance of Baroque music on original instruments, the ensemble was founded in 1979 by the Franco-American harpsichordist and conductor William Christie, and takes its name from a short opera by Marc-Antoine Charpentier.

Les Arts Florissants have been largely responsible for the resurgence of interest in France in 17th century French repertoire as well as in European music of the 17th and 18th centuries more generally. This was repertoire which had, for the most part, been neglected but which is now widely performed and admired.

REVIEWS:

(Concerto.net)

Christine Rice, the aching Penelope, reached out in a soulful expression of sacrifice in ”Amor e un idol vano”(Opera August 2009)
